For the past 13 years Larry Magee, Senior Vice President and Employment Manager, has recruited exceptional individuals to join our bank. He has also built meaningful personal connections and helped hundreds of our employees to learn new skills, achieve their professional goals, and develop their careers at Sandy Spring Bank.

Larry has worked hard to cultivate and enhance his leadership, managerial and technical skills by receiving his Professional in Human Resources Certification and attending the Maryland Banking School. Larry has been recognized for his leadership from the Maryland Banking School, peers, and other notable community partners. Larry not only has a wealth of knowledge from a human resource perspective, he is well connected with industry groups and respected at the bank.

Recently, I sat down with Larry to talk about what he does and why he does it.

Describe your role within the Human Resources Department?

I have the opportunity to work alongside a team of 17 exceptional human resources professionals. Drawing on the diversity, expertise and unique talents of our team, I help lead the development of actionable plans that will allow our employees and business lines to gain and maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace. From recruitment to employee relations, I am here to ensure that all of our current and prospective employees have a remarkable experience at the bank.

From your perspective, what distinguishes Sandy Spring Bank?

That’s simple: the people. This is a place where people really respect one another and value collaborative relationships. Couple that with the rewarding professional opportunities that the bank has to offer, and you have a very special organization. In fact, among our nearly 800 employees, the average tenure is close to ten years. This not only speaks to our strong and thriving culture, but our desire to equip our employees with the resources they need to grow and develop here.

It’s a great thing to see someone move from a teller position to a supervisor, and then on to a management role. Over time, many people also progress to other divisions of the bank. It’s an honor to help someone along in their employment journey, and I am proud to be a part of an organization that values and invests in their people.

How are you involved in the community?

For me, my involvement in local professional associations, schools and nonprofits strengthens my ability to serve my colleagues and community members alike. Through education, advocacy, leadership and community outreach with the Maryland Association of Affirmative Action Officers, Montgomery County Society for Human Resource Management and SEEC’s business advisory council, I’m able to help advance innovative solutions for people management and recruiting tactics—which I hope will ultimately strengthen employment opportunities in this market and help our local economy thrive. I also strive to build partnerships with local human resource professionals, so that I can gain best practices and strengthen my job related skills.

What would you say to someone considering a position at Sandy Spring Bank?

For nearly 150 years, we’ve served as a strong and reliable partner to our clients and communities alike. We look forward to continuing to grow and serve this region, while also creating meaningful and prosperous careers for our employees.
