The Sandy Spring Way

Get to Know Barbara Mulitz, Sandy Spring Trust

October 3rd, 2016 | By Fred Burke

For nearly 150 years, Sandy Spring Bank has been committed to making our community a better place through our sophisticated products and services – from growing local small businesses and commercial real estate lending, to helping first-time homebuyers, and delivering top-notch trust and wealth management services. Across the bank, several employees can be found using their professional skills to help local organizations respond to critical issues.

Barbara Mulitz, a Trust Officer at Sandy Spring Trust, is a leader in the industry and community. Sandy Spring Trust, a key offering of Sandy Spring Bank’s Private Client Group, specializes in providing individuals, families and business owners with customized wealth management services to achieve their growth, asset protection and legacy goals. With over 20 years of experience with trust services, Barbara’s extensive knowledge of estate and trust planning, elder law and financial abuse advocacy enrich her volunteer efforts in the community. This year, Barbara received the Achievement Award by The Council of Professional Women in Banking and Finance recognizing her outstanding achievements in banking and community.

Recently, I sat down with Barbara to learn more about the meaningful work she does every day. Read more about her contributions below.

Describe important community service and activities you support

My volunteer work centers on advocacy around elder financial abuse and related safety issues, women and wealth management, and financial literacy. I’m committed to educational outreach and positive public advocacy initiatives to help individuals and families prepare, prevent and plan for their financial future.  My participation on various boards, committees and community events continue to strengthen my job-related skills, and in turn help me to better serve my clients. My goal is to apply my knowledge and resources to benefit both our clients and the community.

I sit as a commissioner on the Montgomery County Commission on Aging, advising the County Executive, County Council, Department of Health and Human Services, as well as other county departments on the interests, needs and problems of seniors in the county. With elder abuse becoming more prevalent as the population of the U.S. ages, it’s important to advocate for these at-risk individuals who want to age safely with dignity in their communities.

I co-produce a Montgomery County TV show, Seniors Today, providing financial, health and safety tips for the elderly. This opportunity has enabled me to help expand and enhance public knowledge benefiting the aging community and their families.

I am on the board of Eldersafe, to safeguard seniors from financial abuse and provide services to the elderly. This has given me an opportunity to co-chair the Innovative Aging Community Collaborative designed to build a strong, multidisciplinary, and effective response to elder abuse.

How has Sandy Spring Bank supported your efforts?

Sandy Spring Bank encourages all employees to be leaders at work and in the community, and the bank continues to provide thoughtful support of my activities. From developing and implementing outreach programs, to leading financial literacy seminars, to participating in community outreach, my colleagues continue to support and share opportunities that align with my knowledge and experience. With the help of my Sandy Spring Bank team, we continue to do our part to improve the financial well-being of our community members.

Do you have any dreams/aspirations for your career in the near future related to your community service and leadership efforts?

It is my hope to be able to continue to align my professional skills and community volunteer efforts – and to inspire other colleagues to meet the needs of the communities we serve. I’m grateful for my fellow Sandy Spring Bank team members who share their professional expertise to support important community efforts. It is both humbling and rewarding to have so many opportunities, and so much support, to further my professional and personal goals.
