Changing Lives, One Home at a Time: The Maple Hill Story

September 11th, 2014 | By Sandy Spring Bank

???????????????????????????????By John Paukstis, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland

On Saturday, Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland will host a dedication ceremony for the new Maple Hill Community in Gaithersburg, MD. The 19 new townhomes are beautiful, but what we are most excited about is the fact that we are celebrating changing the lives of more than 70 individuals, including 39 children, who will now have a simple, decent, affordable, and safe place to live.

Since 1982, Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland has been committed to building and renovating homes for low to moderate income families. Our mission is clear: to create simple, decent and affordable homeownership opportunities in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The neighbors in need who we support live and work in our communities. They often have careers in health, financial, or service industries and they work hard to provide for their families. However, housing costs have sky-rocketed, and income growth for many has remained flat. Although Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties are part of the most affluent, fastest growing communities in the nation, many people still struggle to get their family out of substandard living conditions.

Thanks to the Maple Hill community, Sandy Spring Bank, and numerous partners across the region, 19 families now have access to a safe, affordable, and energy efficient place to call home. These families will now experience the joy of coming home to a space of their own, many for the first time in their lives.

For the past four years, Sandy Spring Bank has served as one of our financial partners in the Maple Hill project, working closely with us to navigate complex financing challenges. The Sandy Spring team took the time to understand our unique needs and goals, and they worked with us to create a sustainable financing model that will position both Habitat for Humanity and our residents for long-term success. We were also delighted to work with a local organization that shares our commitment to improving the communities we serve. Sandy Spring Bank has a nearly 150-year history working to make our communities a better place to live, work, and raise a family, and its partnership in Maple Hill is clearly bringing that commitment to life.

We’re proud to dedicate the new Maple Hill Community through a ribbon cutting ceremony this Saturday, September 13, at 1:30pm. This was truly a community-wide effort, as more than 26,000 volunteer service hours went into making these 19 homes possible. We will be joined by elected officials, community partners, and some of the new residents – and I invite you to join us in the celebration, too. I also encourage you to share the Maple Hill story with your friends, family and colleagues, and to become involved with your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate: http://www.habitat.org/local

Thank you for your support and for helping to change lives, one home at a time!
